Self-Esteem
Being tired and experiencing changes to your body as a result of your illness can be hard on your sense of self and self-esteem. Here are some tips for boosting your self-esteem.
- Try to continue your regular grooming routine.
- If there is hair loss, use colourful scarves, new hats and/or a wig.
- Women often feel better if they learn to put on makeup, wigs and scarves effectively.
- Talk with a social worker, chaplain or support group.
- Be proud of things you have done and set new, realistic goals.
- Focus on an interesting activity that takes your mind off being ill.
- If a surgical site or scar is really bothering you, talk to someone in your healthcare team about reconstructive or plastic surgery.
Ask your healthcare team what support groups, including programs for women with cancer, in your community or on the internet.
